A close neighbor to Fort Huachuca and Sierra Vista, Huachuca City is a rural community with big views. When you’re not captivated by the sunsets, the cliff facings of Coronado National Forest and awe-inspiring formations of Kartchner Caverns will capture your imagination.
Located southeast of Tucson on Highway 90, Huachuca City is nestled near some of the state’s must-see sites. Cochise Stronghold, in a craggy section of Coronado National Forest, was once the hideout for famed Apache leader Cochise and his people. The granite domes and sheer cliffs served as excellent protection for the chief’s 1,000 followers. Campgrounds and trails are easily accessible. Measuring less than a quarter of a mile, the Interpretive Trail is a short loop that includes informational signage along the way about the stronghold.
If you’re up for a little cave exploration, Kartchner Caverns State Park is also nearby and offers a number of tours of this living cave. The cavernous formation is a wealth of history and geological eccentricities just waiting to be explored.Visit City Site
